South Koreans’ direct investment in overseas assets increased over 12 percent on-year in the first half of this year. According to data released by the Finance Ministry, South Korean companies invested a combined 17-point-45 billion U.S. dollars abroad in the January-June period, up 12-point-one percent year-on-year.

It marks the first increase since South Korea’s foreign direct investment started falling in the first half of 2011. Investments in the financial and insurance sectors marked the largest increase of 172 percent at four-point-87 billion dollars.

Investments going to Asia posted the largest growth of 30 percent at seven-point-28 billion dollars. The ministry said that the country’s overseas investments are expected to grow this year thanks to the government’s investment promotion policies, but they could shrink due to economic uncertainties in China and emerging countries.
